Where to Get Debt Help

When you’ve made the critical decision to seek debt help, there are a number of options available to you. The most important thing is to get the right advice based on your individual circumstances rather than a ‘one-size-fits-all’ type of approach.

We’ve outlined some of the main sources of professional debt advice in the UK below;

Debt Charities

There are a number of debt charities in the UK who you can turn to for free advice on dealing with your debts;

The Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) has branches throughout the UK and can provide a face-to-face debt advice service. One of the main disadvantages of this service is the length of time you may have to wait to get an appointment.

It is estimated that across the UK, the CAB deals with over 7,000 new debt problem enquiries every day. The Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS) is a leading debt charity that offers free and independent advice online and over the telephone. If you arrange an appointment with a debt counsellor, again you may have to wait a number of weeks because of the high demand for this service in the UK.

National Debtline

Is a Government backed debt advice service which specialises in providing free and confidential self-help information on a wide range of debt related issues. The National Debtline service is available to residents of England, Wales and Scotland.

Debt Solutions Companies

Debt problems in the UK are big business and like many other industries, there are unscrupulous debt solutions companies operating in their own best interests, rather than those of their clients. When you’ve made the important decision to seek professional debt help, contacting one of the debt charities could mean facing a long delay in getting an appointment.

There are a number of things to look out for when choosing a debt advice company, including;

• Beware of advice that seems just too good to be true, as it often is

• Does the company have a professional looking website?

• Do you feel pressured into making a quick decision?

• If you feel you’re being misinformed, check the facts by looking online

• How professional are the company in calling you back when they say they will and sending out documentation to you?

• How long have the company been trading?

If you have any niggling doubts about the debt advice you’ve received, don’t be afraid to walk away and approach another company.

Summary

Remember that your financial future could be on the line if you choose or are pressed into making the wrong decision based on your circumstances. It’s always wise to do your own research into any debt solutions company you’re thinking of using as well as the range of debt solutions available to you.
