The rising cost of living is an unwanted wake-up call, according to one commentator.
Columnist Yasmin Alibhai-Brown wrote in the Independent that she had suddenly noticed how high the cost of living was actually rising when her last few supermarket bills "shot up".
She commented that it is not just food prices that are booming but also petrol and even a trip to the hairdressers.
The Ugandan-born journalist said she was concerned about lower income families that would be feeling the pinch more than others.
She said families were "suffering the effects of the Northern Rock fiasco, having [their] homes repossessed, losing jobs and enduring tumbling share prices".
Before pointing out that it was even worse in less-developed countries.
"They walk about in the lands of no hope, through the valleys of death, try to keep their own alive for a little while longer," she concluded.
Meanwhile, the International Monetary Fund warned about the danger of rising food prices earlier this month.
Speaking after its spring meeting, managing director Dominique Strauss Kahn said that the higher cost of staple foods could have "terrible" consequences.
Rising food prices could have a serious effect on people struggling with debt.
