An increasing number of young couples are forced to marry to stay out of poverty, according to a new report.
The Civitas/Ipsos Mori survey revealed nearly 79 per cent of people aged between 20 and 35 living together want to marry in order to save money.
According to the new report from Civitas, there is a shocking poverty divide between couples living together and those who are married.
Second Thoughts on the Family claims that 55 per cent of single parents and 43 per cent of cohabiting parents live in affluent areas compared to nearly 68 per cent of married parents.
Anastasia de Waal, author of the report and head of family and education at Civitas, said: "What are construed [by Labour] as positive manifestations of diversity are in fact very often negative manifestations of deprivation and limiting circumstances."
The report criticises the government for dismissing family structure and slams the opposition for offering financial incentives to marry.
Civitas is the institute for the study of civil society and acts independently to discover solutions to social problems.
