E.On piles on the misery

Article Category: Debt Management Help and Advice

Energy supplier E.On has piled on the misery for millions of already hard-pressed energy users by increasing its tariffs.

It has put up gas and electricity prices by 15 per cent and 9.7 per cent respectively, potentially pushing many people over the financial edge.

Price comparison website moneysupermarket.com, commenting on the price hikes, said: "This move by E.On will have the greatest negative impact on customers in Eastern England, the East Midlands and most of North West England who will see any mortgage savings wiped out.

"E.On has 3.6 million customers there – the bulk of whom are on its Standard tariff.

"The argument to change to an online Monthly Direct Debit tariff now is stronger than ever.

"Even before this move, E.On’s Standard dual fuel tariff was averaging £171 more than British Gas Click Energy 4 – now the difference is even starker at £285."

The Bank of England yesterday reduced its base rate by a quarter of one per cent to 5.25 per cent.
