Get advice before signing up
Article Category: Debt Management Help and AdviceDebtors should get readily available independent financial information from a free advice agency before they sign up to anything, according to a debt charity.
Chris Tapp, from Credit Action, says that if people are concerned about their financial situation the first thing they should do is sit down with an advisor from one of these agencies.
They can talk through all the options available on a non-obligation basis before arriving at a suitable solution - at no cost to themselves.
Mr Tapp goes on to say that although a consolidated
loan may be the best solution he would not advise people to go straight to a provider as there are numerous options available, including debt management plans and IVAs.
He added: "Often it is an awareness issue with people
they do no realise that there are big charities providing that sort of help."
According to the Insolvency Service there were 26,956 individual insolvencies in England and Wales in the second quarter of 2007 - an increase of 4.2 per cent on the same period last year.
