Jobless struggle to pay Christmas debt

Article Category: Debt Management Help and Advice

Many of the jobless will struggle to pay back debt accumulated over the Christmas period.

In a poll taken for the Jobcentre Plus website, it emerged that 55 per cent expected to spend more than they could afford over the festive period.

People in the north-east were more likely to have debts in 2008 (61.3 per cent) compared to Londoners at 50.4 per cent.

On a positive note, 45 per cent of the 5,000 respondents said they were looking to plan ahead to solve any financial problems.

Susan Clark, personal adviser at Jobcentre Plus, advises people who have overspent over Christmas to sit down and plan their longer-term financial future.

"Short-term fixes provide temporary relief but getting a job is the best way to improve your financial situation in the long-term," she said.

The research figures give further ammunition to the Conservative party, which says the government has done nothing to stem the rising tide of debt threatening to engulf millions of Britons.

Philip Hammond, shadow chief secretary, said that with the rising costs of living and falling take-home pay, families were "being forced to take on a huge burden of debt".
